NBA All-Star Reserves – coaches select reserves to join fan-voted starters for the All-Star Game

What Are All-Star Reserves?

After NBA All-Star voting determines the five starters from each conference (two guards, two forwards, one center), head coaches around the league select the All-Star reserves. Each conference gets seven reserves: two guards, two forwards, one center, and two wild-card players. Those 14 reserves join the 10 starters to form the full NBA All-Star Game rosters.

Coaches cannot vote for their own players. Reserves are typically stars who did not win the fan vote but had strong seasons. Together with the starters, they make up the 24 players who compete in the All-Star Game and contribute to the final NBA score and MVP result.
